CLAMP’s Magic Knight Rayearth is a short manga in two arcs. Kodansha sells it in English two ways: six paperbacks, or two 25th Anniversary hardcover box sets, one per arc. Both carry the same revised translation, so the choice is format and price, not text. For most readers the six paperbacks are the route: $77.94 at US list for the whole story, against $259.98 for the two boxes.

The scale of the story comes from Anime News Network: CLAMP serialized the manga in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi from 1993 to 1996, in six volumes. Three tell the first arc and three the second.

The paperbacks, and the numbering trap

Each paperback lists at $12.99. The trap is the label. The second arc restarts its numbering, so the fourth book is printed as Part 2 Vol. 1; a shelf that reads 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3 is complete, not doubled. Penguin Random House’s series page, which distributes Kodansha, numbers them Books 1 to 6 in this order, and Kodansha keeps the two arcs on separate series pages (first arc, second arc). Search with the words “Part 2” when buying the second three.

On the translation, the distributor’s copy for Books 1 to 3 says the paperbacks feature “the updated translation and lettering created for the 25th-anniversary release,” and the copy for Books 4 to 6 says they bring “the refreshed translation of the hardcover box set to a paperback format.” The same copy calls Books 1 to 3 a large-format paperback. We have not compared the books page by page, so this guide makes no claim about paper, binding or print quality.

The 25th Anniversary box sets

Kodansha’s box set page describes the first box as a limited-edition hardcover set containing the complete first arc “with a new translation, new designs, and a color art book, all at a super-large size with gold foil.” The product pages, read here through Internet Archive captures from July 2026, say Box Set 1 holds “three volumes of manga covering the entire first series” and Box Set 2 holds three volumes “covering the entire series of Magic Knight Rayearth Part Two,” each with the full-color art book companion, on premium paper with foil-stamped covers.

25th Anniversary Manga Box Set 2 (second arc)97816323695052020-12-29736$129.99

The hardcovers inside are their own books, not the paperback ISBNs in a slipcase. What the boxes add is size, the hardcover format and the two art books; what they cost is $182.04 more than the paperbacks at list. That is a comparison of publisher list prices, not of what any store charges today.

Which to buy

Buy the six paperbacks to read the story. Buy the boxes for the art books and the oversized hardcovers, and only if both arcs are wanted in that format, because the two boxes cover different halves of the story and neither finishes it alone. Mixing formats works for the text, since both use the same translation, but it will not make a matching shelf.

If you know the anime

The manga and the 1990s anime part company in the second arc. Anime News Network’s review of the complete Blu-ray collection says the anime’s first season is “firmly based on the source manga” while the second “takes extensive liberties with the source material, including the introduction of new main villains, although the conclusion is supposedly the same.” Anyone who knows only that version should expect a different second half. The new TV anime that began in October 2026 goes the other way: its director, Yui Miura, told ANN that it is based on the original manga “while incorporating additional episodes.”

The checked ISBN records and buying links are on the Magic Knight Rayearth catalog page. For the anime, the watch order sorts the two TV seasons, the OVA and the 2026 series. Older English editions from earlier publishers are not covered here; we have not checked their contents against these books.
