Death Note’s tenth standard book opens with a mob surrounding Near’s headquarters. The inspected contents list chapters 80 to 88, and the licensed excerpt begins chapter 80 during that threat. This note reads only printed pages 7 to 17, through Near’s preparations to leave disguised as a riot officer. It does not establish the completed escape, the later notebook transfer or any plan’s final success. The opening continues an investigation already in progress rather than explaining the contest from its beginning.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
Demegawa calls the crowd fellow supporters of justice while directing them to trap and expose the people inside. Near questions whether their devotion is really to Kira’s promised justice, then tests a more immediate appetite by sending money into the street. The crowd’s attention turns to the falling notes, and Demegawa follows it despite his instructions about filming the escape. That diversion exposes a weakness in the mob’s shared purpose, but Near still needs another protection: riot gear hides faces, and Rester is less recognizable to the Japanese investigators than Near. Light understands how the disguise changes his problem. Ordering the police captured would reveal a connection he wants concealed. The opening makes anonymity a material limit on killing power, while leaving the actual exit beyond the pages inspected.
