Death Note standard Volume 9 opens in the aftermath of the failed assault on the kidnappers. Its inspected contents list chapters 71 to 79. The opening follows the investigators' uncertainty and Light's next attempt to control the notebook situation. Black Edition 5 includes this standard book together with the next one; its spine number measures collected books. Buy the single for the standard sequence, and check the edition name before assuming another ninth book supplies the same coverage.

Light treats notebook ownership as something to rearrange while protecting the memory and information that make it useful. He gives up one book while planning to stay in contact with another, and asks Ryuk to help turn the shinigami seeking his notebook into a means of killing Mello. Ryuk does not promise that the proposed bargain will work. The contrast with Soichiro's uncertainty is severe: the father wonders how continuing to live endangers Sayu, while the son designs which facts and voices the task force will hear. When a caller claiming to be Kira offers help, the reader has already seen Light prepare that performance. This reading covers only printed pages 7 to 19 of the licensed VIZ preview, not the plan's success or the later confrontation.
