Fairy Tail Volume 8 opens in the middle of Gray's fight with Juvia during the Phantom Lord attack. The contents list chapters 57–65, and this standard book continues a guild conflict already underway. The licensed opening gives the duel an awkward romantic dimension while preserving its immediate danger. The analysis below reads only those opening pages, ending during an ice attack rather than at a certified victory. Fairy Tail Box Set 1 already includes this standard volume.

Juvia's feelings keep changing the practical terms of the fight. Jealousy heats the water Gray tries to freeze; embarrassment after being caught in his ice gives way to a promise not to harm him, which he mistakes for surrender. The misunderstanding does not make her harmless: the passage began with her declaring that Lucy must not live. A brief account of people rejecting Juvia because rain follows her explains why Gray's irritation hurts without excusing that threat. The duel is strongest where speech and ability expose different things. Gray wants a winnable contest, while Juvia hears another personal rejection. Their incompatible readings of the encounter help drive its renewed violence, leaving sympathy and responsibility unresolved rather than canceling each other.

“Fairy Tail will never let you get away with it. That's the kind of guild they are. You will spend each day trembling in the shadow of the world's most frightening guild. For the rest of your short lives!!!”

Lucy Heartfilia, Fairy Tail Source / locator: Kodansha Comics English manga, Vol. 8 (ISBN 9781612621012), chapter 60, Wings of Fire, pp. 76–77. Read first-hand, 30 September 2026, in a library scan of the paperback at the Internet Archive (item fairytail0008mash; its copyright page gives this ISBN, English translation copyright 2009, a fourth printing), through the public reader's in-book search, with nothing borrowed; page images 829 by 1332 pixels. Said to Gajeel while she is Phantom Lord's captive. Excerpt: three consecutive balloons, the last on p. 76 and the first two on p. 77. Before them, to Gajeel's "Whaaa? You got the balls to give us attitude in your condition?", she says "Why not? You creeps don't scare me." and, after his "What did you say?", "If I die, you'll be the ones in trouble for it!" (a balloon with no tail over her bound fist). After them Gajeel answers with two balloons in one panel, "Now that sounds like fun!!" on the right and "You want to test that theory?!" on the left. The first quoted balloon is in a panel showing the lower half of Lucy's face; the other two sit beside a close-up of it. Lettering case normalized. Neither page shows a printed folio; both are counted from the chapter's title page, which the contents page puts at p. 63, and from the scan's leaves n25 and n26, which print folios 25 and 24: the scan puts the later page of each opening first. Until 30 September 2026 this row carried Wikiquote's different wording ("Fairy Tail will never forgive you! That's the kind of guild they are! You'll be shivering under the shadow of the world's scariest guild every day for the rest of your life!", cited there as chapter 60, pages 7-8, as part of a speech that opens "Then why don't you try killing me?"); replaced with Kodansha's wording on that date. Lucy is the job Phantom Lord was hired for: its master, Jose, tells her they were commissioned to escort her home "by none other than your very own dear father!!", and on the page before this line her captors call her the daughter of somebody rich. By this chapter Fairy Tail's hall has been smashed and Levy's team attacked by Gajeel. So when Lucy, Phantom Lord's captive, promises the guild's retribution, she is spending credit in a guild Natsu invited her into in chapter one. It has already gone to war with Phantom over them, and she is betting it will do the same for her. That bet is the biography in miniature: she comes from a house where she was an asset to be retrieved, and this is the first place she trusts to come and get her. It pays out when Natsu comes to confront Gajeel. Eight chapters later she goes home and gives her father the same warning to his face.
