Chapters 9 to 17, and the arrival of Buggy the Clown, a villain One Piece declines to finish with. Luffy asks Nami to navigate for him and is refused; she uses him as bait instead, to get at Buggy's treasure. Zoro is with him, and the fight that follows runs most of the book. Buggy is a small opponent by any later standard, and that is not the point of him: he is still on the page in Vol. 11, and the series keeps finding work for him. Season 1 of the anime covers chapters 1 to 100, so this book sits inside it. Viz states that Omnibus book 1 holds the first three volumes, which means the Buggy business is sold whole there and split here.

Buggy's power is the inverse of Luffy's: Luffy stretches, Buggy comes apart, separating his body at will and putting it back together. A man who can do that is a poor target for a swordsman and a worse one for a boy who punches, which is part of why the fight takes two volumes rather than one. It is unfinished when this book ends and carries into Vol. 3. That is the shape One Piece keeps for the next hundred volumes, and it is the most useful thing to know before buying singles: the fights do not respect the spine. The other job the volume does is Nami. She works as a thief, a decoy and an antagonist inside nine chapters, refuses the crew throughout, and the reason she steals from pirates is withheld until Vol. 9, seven books later.
