Chapters 441 to 449, and the volume where the anime and the books come apart by exactly one chapter. Season 9 ends at chapter 441, the first chapter here, and season 10 opens at 442, the second, so a viewer arriving from Enies Lobby on screen starts this book one chapter in. There is a second catch. Episodes 326 to 336 of season 9 adapt nothing from the manga, so the last episode covering anything in print is 325. What the book itself holds is a beginning: fog, a skeleton, and a ship the size of an island. At 200 pages it is the slimmest volume between 40 and 52, and Box Set 2, stated by Viz as volumes 24 to 46, ends with it.

Thriller Bark begins, and it begins as a genre exercise: One Piece follows twelve volumes of raid and rescue with a haunted house. Brook is the arrival that matters. A skeleton left alone in the fog long enough to be delighted by anyone at all, he agrees to join the crew in the chapter he meets them, then explains that he cannot leave, because his shadow is held on the ship the fog belongs to. The whole arc is stated there as an errand: go and get it back. Gecko Moria is named as the one holding it. The structural interest is what Oda does straight after an arc that ended with a funeral for a ship, which is to write a story about people who have lost the one thing that lets them stand in the sun. Chopper, Usopp and Nami board first. That is the boarding party a reader would expect to be frightened, and the book is content to let them be.
