Four of these eleven chapter titles are built on one template: 'Pirate Sanji vs. Mystery Man Absalom', 'Pirate Usopp vs. Mystery Woman Perona', 'Pirate Zoro vs. Samurai Ryuma', 'Pirate Chopper vs. Mystery Man Hogback'. That is a card of matches, announced as one. It is also a middle: the book opens with the crew already committed and ends on the giant of chapter 470, so it wants Vol. 49 beside it. Zoro against Ryuma is the fight the volume exists to deliver, because the zombie he is fighting carries Brook's shadow: beating it hands the shadow back and with it the sun, which is the errand the crew came on. Sanji gets Nami away from Absalom, Usopp beats Perona, and Chopper and Robin deal with Hogback, so the four named matches all resolve inside one book. Then the last chapters turn to Oars, the giant corpse wearing Luffy's shadow, which fights like Luffy because it is running on him. That is the arc's one good idea about power. Moria does not fight: he subcontracts, and every zombie on the island is a borrowed person. The crew has to beat its own captain's shadow with the captain standing next to it, and the book ends before it finds out whether that is possible.
