Two arcs meet inside this book, the end of the fight for Usopp's village and the start of the search for a cook, and neither gets all of it. Chapters 36 to 44 open with Django chasing Kaya through the forest, Zoro and Usopp chasing Django, and Luffy and Kuro on the shore. Then the volume changes subject, puts the crew back to sea and lands them at a floating restaurant near the entrance to the Grand Line. Chapter 39 gives the book its title, 'For Whom the Bell Tolls', and chapter 43 is titled 'Sanji'. Bought alone this is the back half of one arc and the front of another, which is the case for owning chapters 27 to 53 together; our arithmetic on the chapter ranges puts that stretch in Omnibus book 2, and Viz states contents for book 1 only.

Luffy beats Kuro on the shore and the plan for Kaya's will collapses with him. Her thanks take the form of a ship, the Going Merry, handed over as a parting gift, which is the practical reason the arc happened at all, and Usopp leaves with the crew. The back half of the volume does three jobs at once. Johnny and Yosaku, Zoro's old bounty-hunting partners, give the crew a destination; they also report that 'Hawk-Eyes' Dracule Mihawk, the world's greatest swordsman, has been sighted near it, which is the first time Zoro's ambition has a specific man attached to it; and Luffy damages the restaurant on arrival and is put to work there for a week, which is how the story gets its cook in front of him. Sanji is introduced giving free food to a starving pirate, and the volume treats that as the whole character. Chapter 44 is titled 'Three Tough Cooks'.
