Chapters 45 to 53, and the volume where the world's greatest swordsman walks into a restaurant. Luffy is working off his debt as a waiter when Don Krieg's flagship, torn to pieces, anchors alongside and Krieg staggers in half-starved, asking for food. Behind him comes the debut that matters: 'Hawk-Eyes' Dracule Mihawk, named in the previous book as the man Zoro intends to beat, who followed Krieg out of the Grand Line after wiping out his fleet. Seven volumes further on, Mihawk is named as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, the pirates the World Government keeps on its books. Chapter 52 gives this one its title, 'The Oath'. Season 1 of the anime covers chapters 1 to 100 and takes in all of it.

Zoro challenges Mihawk and is beaten, and the volume does not soften it: no reversal, no second wind, no rematch. Chapter 51 is titled 'Zoro Overboard' and chapter 52, the one the book is named for, follows it immediately. Usopp, Johnny and Yosaku carry him off on the bounty hunters' boat to chase Nami, who has already left with the Going Merry, so the crew ends the volume in three pieces with its captain alone in a restaurant owing a debt. Mihawk's job in the story is fixed here and does not change afterwards: he is the ceiling, and every later measurement of Zoro is taken against a man he met in the sixth book. What Luffy owes is settled by fighting Krieg and the hundred men Krieg is demanding food for, which is what the next two volumes are.
