The middle book of a three-volume siege, and the one where the fighting stops to explain the cook. Chapters 54 to 62 keep the restaurant under Don Krieg's crew while Luffy works off the week he owes, and the center of the volume is a flashback rather than a fight. Gin, the pirate Sanji fed for nothing back in Vol. 5, takes the one-legged head chef Zeff hostage, and Sanji puts his hands down. Nothing starts here and nothing finishes here: the engagement begins in Vol. 6 and is settled in Vol. 8, and a reader who owns only this one owns a middle. 'The Crap-Geezer' is the title on the cover. Season 1 of the anime covers chapters 1 to 100 and takes in all three books.

The flashback is the reason to own the book. Zeff, a renowned pirate, and a young Sanji are shipwrecked; Zeff hands the boy a small bundle of food, keeps a much larger one for himself and sends him to the far side of the island to keep watch. Weeks later a famished Sanji comes back to take the pirate's food and finds the large bundle holds nothing but gold, and that Zeff has devoured his own leg. The character is explained in one sequence, and it explains the present-day volume backwards: why Sanji feeds a starving enemy, why he will not surrender the restaurant, why he stops fighting the moment Zeff is the hostage. Gin cannot make himself kill Sanji and begs Krieg to leave the place alone, and Krieg answers with poison gas, on his own right-hand man. The fight with Krieg is not settled in this volume.
