Season 19: Whole Cake Island ep. 783–891

This book does not stand alone: it opens in the middle of an escape and closes in the middle of a duel. Chapters 870 to 879 begin with Bege's castle already failing and Big Mom's forces already through it, and the Katakuri fight that starts here runs on past the last page. A reader who does not own Vol. 86 and Vol. 88 should not buy this one by itself, and saying so is more use than pretending otherwise. The chapter that gives the volume its title, 'Bittersweet', is 877. Season 19 covers chapters 825 to 910 and includes all of it. Viz lists two hundred and eight pages at $11.99, and the book sits in Box Set 4, which Viz states as volumes 71 to 90.

Pedro is the cost. He spends his life to clear the way for the Sunny, and the mink who joined the crew's operation on Zou one arc ago does not leave Totto Land. The other half of the book sets up the fight the arc is remembered for. Katakuri has the Mochi-Mochi Fruit, which the series is careful to make a near copy of Luffy's Gum-Gum Fruit, so the duel is a like-for-like comparison rather than a mismatch, and the climax of the arc is Luffy fighting a better-executed version of himself. Around them the chateau is converted into cake by Streusen to stop it killing the city, which is the arc's joke and its physics at once. Big Mom, denied her cake a second time, goes into a rampage that turns the escape into a chase, and the replacement cake being baked behind her back is the only weapon anyone has that works on her.
