Season 20: Wano Country ep. 892–1088

Wano is the longest stretch of One Piece the anime has given to one season, and this is the book where it stops advancing and starts spreading out. Chapters 922 to 931 split the crew across the country under cover identities: Nami training with a kunoichi, Sanji running a noodle cart, Franky working for the carpenter who drew up Kaido's mansion, Zoro taken in by a beggar in Ebisu Town, Robin working the Flower Capital's parties. Luffy meets Kaido in the second chapter, and the result of that sets where he spends the rest of the book. Very little here advances the invasion plan. It is placement, and it is not the reason to buy the run. The anime offers no help in choosing a start either: season 20 runs to chapter 1060 in one unbroken block, which takes in this volume and every one of the twelve after it.

Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.

The volume is named for a character who is mostly a reputation inside it, which is the arc's method here: people are introduced long before they are used. Luffy spars with Kaido in chapter 923 and is put down in a single blow, then wakes in the Udon labor camp next to Eustass Kid, and the book spends much of its length on food, a vice warden and an old prisoner called Hyo whose real name is held back for the next volume. Around that, Franky loses his temper over the missing plans for Kaido's mansion, Sanji runs into a protection racket the Kyoshiro family operates for Orochi, and Robin is caught searching the shogun's party for a Poneglyph. The arrival that matters most is Big Mom's: her ship is capsized off Wano by Kaido's forces and she is found on a beach with no memory by Otama, Momonosuke, Okiku and Chopper. Nothing resolves. Everything is a fuse.
