Season 20: Wano Country ep. 892–1088

This is where Wano stops being a caper and turns into something worse, and the shift is engineered rather than accidental. Chapters 932 to 942 spend most of their length on disguises, a bath-house inspection, a sumo tournament and a Robin Hood thief who has been plaguing the shogun, then spend the rest collecting on all of it at a public execution. The arc has run its occupied country partly as comedy until now. It stops. The Omnibus Edition groups this volume with the two before it, which is our arithmetic rather than anything Viz states, and the grouping is the right one: those three books are a single unit of setup and the bill for it.

Three identities come apart here and each one costs something. The beggar Tonoyasu, who took Zoro home in the previous volume, is the daimyo Yasu the Hedgehog, and he claims to be Ushimitsu Kozo and to have sent the cryptic messages that have been circulating; he confesses in order to keep the invasion plan hidden, and he is executed in public, mocking Orochi, in front of his daughter. Old Hyo of the labor camp is Hyogoro the Flower, and he becomes the man who teaches Luffy haki, which is the most consequential thing in the book for the fighting that follows. Komurasaki is Hiyori, Momonosuke's younger sister, and she survives the sword stroke that appears to kill her. What makes the execution land is the crowd: Ebisu Town laughs all the way through it, and the reason the town laughs is withheld until the next volume, which is the cruelest structural decision in the arc.
