“You humans don't make any sense to me. You throw away your lives for nothing.”

Envy, Fullmetal Alchemist Source / locator: Brotherhood episode 10 (Separate Destinations). Said as he hangs up the phone on Mustang after Hughes is shot. Wikiquote · Transcription

The strongest case for Envy is the evidence in front of him. Hughes has been shot, the call to Mustang has produced nothing but a colonel asking whether he is okay, and Envy puts the receiver down himself. By any accounting available that night, the life bought nothing: no message delivered, no name passed on. The answer takes until episode 54. Mustang spends them hunting Hughes's killer, Envy mocks him for being dogged about it, and the pursuit ends with Envy burned down to his true form and Edward saying aloud what nobody had noticed: Envy is jealous of humans. Envy takes his own life rather than live with having been seen through. So the call was not for nothing. It was late, and it was collected by someone else. What Envy cannot read is spending a life on a direction instead of a result.

“Huh? You mean I didn't tell you? But Doctor, there's no need to mourn them now, is there? I mean, you've made so many Philosopher's Stones, haven't you? And used people's lives to do it!”

Envy, Fullmetal Alchemist Source / locator: Brotherhood episode 43 (Bite of the Ant). To Marcoh, about his former research staff. Wikiquote · Transcription

Envy has Marcoh held hostage and has already threatened to wipe out a village, and he picks guilt as the finishing blow. The miscalculation is specific. Envy's body runs on a Philosopher's Stone, and he has just reminded the one man in the room who knows how those stones are built that he built them. Marcoh accepts every word of the charge and uses the knowledge Envy cited to take Envy's stone apart, and the homunculus crawls out of the wreck as a small larval thing. The taunt commits Envy to a fact he never priced in: shame only keeps a person still while he is still defending himself. Marcoh had stopped. Envy's whole method in this series is to find what people cannot bear to hear and say it, and this is the one time the listener had already said it to himself.
