“Defeat us? Please, do try. You are short, so you've always fought those who were bigger than you. Put another way, you have little experience fighting those who are smaller than you!”

Pride, Fullmetal Alchemist Source / locator: Brotherhood episode 60 (Eye of Heaven, Gateway of Earth). To Edward. Wikiquote · Transcription

Passed around as the cleverest height joke in a series built on height jokes, and it holds up for about two seconds. Edward's answer, when the episode cuts back to them, is short: he has fought nothing but bigger opponents, so he knows the attack patterns a runt will have, and half of Pride's face breaks. The analysis was backwards. Being small does not leave a fighter ignorant of small fighters; it makes him the leading expert on one. Pride met Edward as Selim Bradley, gushing that the Fullmetal Alchemist was tiny just like everyone says, and the insight he has saved since then is a premise any sparring partner could have refuted. The credit for this exchange belongs to Edward's comeback, and the setup is only there to be knocked down.

“Do you need to ask such a ridiculous question? It's only natural we should want to obey our father, no matter the order.”

Pride, Fullmetal Alchemist Source / locator: Brotherhood episode 61 (He Who Would Swallow God). Answering Edward, who has asked whether Pride assumes Greed should do everything Father tells him. Wikiquote · Transcription

Edward calls this being a brainwashed punk, but the next few exchanges show the cost more precisely than the insult. Pride's body is failing and Father, by Pride's own admission, does not care. So he tries to take Edward's body instead, arguing that Hohenheim's bloodline makes them virtually brothers, and Kimblee, a soul inside him, blocks the attempt and calls it a disgrace. The obedience he calls natural leaves him nothing to stand on once the orders stop: no body of his own, no rescue, and one of the souls he carries lecturing him on honor. When Edward strips him down, what remains is a tiny body crying for its mother, and the images that surface as Edward reaches him are of Bradley and his wife. Father is nowhere in them. The attachment the series leaves him is to the household he was planted in.
