This is a man who responded to losing his mentor and his ship by rebuilding his own body out of scrap, and then rebuilt his vocabulary to match. Everything he says arrives at maximum volume in a word he invented, which is an efficient way of never being asked a follow-up question. Lola gets a compliment, a punchline and a closed door, in that order, and the closed door is the load-bearing part. The crew spends two more arcs before it finds out what happened to Tom, and it does not find out from him.

Fans quote this as a highlight and it is the point at which the character gets worse. Franky's real material is a shipwright who grieves ships: he built the Thousand Sunny because the Going Merry could not be saved, and the crew's most upsetting hour is a funeral for a boat. General Franky is a mecha the crew assembles for a gag, and it converts a man who understands what it means for a vessel to die into a man who is one. The catchphrase escalation is the same move, adding a rank to a title to a name until nothing in the sentence identifies a person. It is a very funny bit. It is also the series filing its most thoughtful character under merchandise.
