“My treasure? Why, it's right where I left it... It's yours if you can find it... but you'll have to search the whole world!”

Nothing on the page has yet said what the treasure is, what it is called or whether it exists when the answer arrives; two soldiers with pikes, a kneeling man in a cape and three caption boxes are the entire setup. That order is the trick. The captions have already listed wealth, fame and power as his, so nothing on the page is bequeathed; what he leaves is a condition of search, not a map, and the crowd is roaring in the panel beside his face while the blade's sound effect lands. The only witness who could be asked a follow-up question is dead by the bottom of the page. A dare from a man who cannot be cross-examined cannot be negotiated with, so it starts an era rather than a treasure hunt. The chapter then spends forty-odd pages in and around a harbor village with a small boy and needs no further plot, because one page has already made the sea the place where everyone alive is looking.
