Cartography is an odd ambition for an adventure story and it is the correct one for her. Everyone else on the ship wants to reach something — a title, a rank, a place. She wants to record what is there, which is a fundamentally different relationship to the same ocean. It also has an edge the crew never comments on. A complete map of a world nobody has mapped is a strategic object, and the organisation that spent her childhood occupying her village would very much like one. Her dream is the only one aboard that would be dangerous in the wrong hands, which the series has quietly acknowledged for over a thousand chapters without ever making it the plot.
