Younger Toguro makes isolation a condition of strength, then tries to impose it on his opponent. Wikiquote's secondary English transcription of YuYu Hakusho's Toguro's Desire records Yusuke crediting his friends with helping him and giving him a reason to win. Toguro calls that attachment a limitation and threatens to kill another friend. His claim therefore requires violence against other people, beyond any discipline he applies to himself. The same recorded episode ends with his acknowledgment that Yusuke answered his absolute strength. That admission exposes the weakness in his argument: an opponent who credited relationships could meet the power Toguro pursued by dismissing them. It does not establish that friendship always makes a fighter stronger, that Toguro planned to lose, or that he repudiated his belief. The narrower conclusion is enough. His strongest performance fails to show that his way of living was necessary to produce an opponent capable of answering it.

What it commits him to is shown two episodes later, in episode 66: in the Spirit World he demands the most brutal level of the underworld (in the English dub, the request is changed to limbo). The last words on the tournament floor are calm, and the calm is the tell. He did not want to win. He built the only opponent who could beat him and then thanked him for finishing the job. Read that way the Dark Tournament is not a story about Yusuke getting strong; it is a very long suicide, organized by a man too proud to do it any other way, and the line is the moment he admits it.

Steelman him, because the fight does. Toguro won this tournament fifty years ago as a human, after a demon killed all of his students, and asked to be turned into a demon because he did not want to age and lose his power. The philosophy is a survivor's philosophy and it worked: he is the strongest thing in the arena. His method for teaching it is to appear to kill Kuwabara in front of Yusuke, and the method is also his refutation, since what the apparent death produces is not a fighter who needs nobody but one fighting for somebody. The concession the show makes is larger than it looks. Toguro is right that attachment is a limit. He is wrong about which direction the limit runs.
