Leorio’s claim to want money is easier to understand when it is kept beside the purpose that claim conceals. VIZ’s licensed introduction to Hunter x Hunter Volume 8 identifies his true aspiration as becoming a doctor who helps poor people. The early exam journey offers a less flattering first impression. In the licensed second chapter, he lists a house, a car and expensive drink as reasons to become a Hunter, then threatens Kurapika after an insult. Our reading is that the medical ambition should complicate that conduct, rather than turn every outburst into a disguised kindness. The same chapter also supplies a concrete counterweight: Leorio and Kurapika abandon their fight when a sailor goes overboard, and together catch Gon’s legs as he reaches for the man. Leorio helps save someone before he has won a license or acquired wealth. Chapter 3 tests his judgment differently. He rejects an examiner’s demand to choose between loved ones, but his anger at the question also leaves Kurapika having to restrain his attack. Leorio’s compassion and temper occupy the same scenes. The interesting measure is whether his wish to help becomes useful action; a generous destination does not make every step toward it wise.

Leorio and Kurapika stop fighting to catch Gon's legs as he dives after a sailor. Cooperation precedes this apology; neither waits for the other to become agreeable before helping. That order matters more than the captain's amusement afterward. Leorio has threatened a survivor in terms of his murdered clan, and a successful rescue cannot make the threat harmless. His short acknowledgment is a necessary second act, separate from the physical help. The friendship begins with both: doing something decent together, then naming the cruelty that still needs answering.

“Me, I'm sticking to what makes sense.”

At the harbor, Leorio trusts the express bus and dismisses the captain's advice to head uphill. He follows his friends only after overhearing that the buses never arrived, then presents his reversal as concern for their safety. The excuse protects his pride by borrowing a motive his conduct has already made credible. Aboard the ship, Leorio claimed he wanted wealth. Later, when Gon lunged after a sailor, he and Kurapika caught Gon's legs despite their quarrel. That help does not erase Leorio's earlier cruelty toward Kurapika, which still requires an apology. It does make his account of himself incomplete: money is the reason he offers, while the emergency draws out another priority. The bus scene keeps that generosity from becoming an all-purpose defense. His advice is wrong, and his explanation conceals why he changes it. Leorio can care for these companions and use that care to save face. The comic boast is weaker than the person who makes it; correcting his route is useful, but pretending he never needed correction is not.
