“Win or lose, you'll gain nothing if you don't give your all! That's true of both men and nations!”

Kyoshiro Tohdoh, Code Geass Source / locator: Season 1, Episode 17 (Knight). Spoken to Suzaku Kururugi, whom Tohdoh trained. Wikiquote · Transcription

Tohdoh trained the boy he is shouting at, which is what makes this worth setting beside Suzaku's own rule that a victory won by dishonest means is no victory at all. The two creeds do not fit together. Tohdoh's is about expenditure: the outcome is not what gets judged, the effort is, and anyone who holds something back has already forfeited whatever they were protecting. Suzaku's is about method, and it quietly assumes a clean route to winning exists for a man standing in a conquered country wearing the conqueror's uniform. The student kept the harder-sounding half and dropped the useful one. Watch what he does with it. He throws himself at every assignment likely to kill him, which looks like giving everything and is nearer the opposite, since a man arranging his own death is withholding the one thing that would let him keep fighting. Tohdoh is describing what you spend on a fight you might lose. Suzaku heard a rule about deserving to win.
