Technobabble, says the objection, and it is not wrong about the physics: a sentence of invented mechanics with no more content than any other weapons briefing in any other mecha show. Concede the physics. Then look at the first four words, which are not technical at all. Nina is answering a question about whether she understands what she has built, and her answer is that she has considered it and arrived here regardless. Everything after that is the considering, presented as reassurance. This is the character introduced as the student council's nervous one, hiding behind a laptop while everyone else organised something ridiculous, and the series traces a straight line from a private terror to a device that removes a city. The register is the whole point. She does not sound like a fanatic. She sounds like someone reading out a result, which is how the worst things in this show get authorised.

She means it as a compliment and it is the cruellest thing anyone says to Suzaku all season. Read the structure. The weapon goes to him because he has stopped belonging to the category of people it will be used on. Nina spent a season unable to share a room with a Japanese person, and she has resolved that by deciding unilaterally that her friend has opted out. She is offering him membership on condition that he agree the category is real. He takes the bomb. What follows is the Tokyo Settlement, and the show is exact about one part of the accounting: he does not fire it deliberately, which is the only mercy extended to him, and it makes no difference whatsoever to the people underneath. This line is where the arithmetic starts. A device built by a frightened girl to keep a kind of person away from her ends up in the hands of a man who has spent years trying to stop being that kind of person, and it removes them both.
