Shikamaru can surrender a match when his chakra runs low; he cannot make a failed mission equally tidy. The official Naruto site's September 2024 manga retrospective places his calculated withdrawal against Temari before his first assignment as a captain: retrieving Sasuke with Naruto, Choji, Kiba and Neji. The shift changes what a clever decision costs. His teammates fight separate opponents so the pursuit can continue, and Choji and Neji suffer critical injuries. Shikamaru himself reads Tayuya's methods and constructs an effective trap, but her increased strength defeats his ability to hold it. Temari has to rescue him. Intelligence remains useful without becoming control over every outcome. After the mission fails, his wish to abandon the profession meets his father's challenge to consider the people who will need him in future. Our reading is that command becomes serious when Shikamaru's thinking has to include those who carry out his plans and those who survive them. Their injuries are not decorative proof of his resolve. They are a reason to improve judgment without pretending that perfect foresight was available.
