Askeladd means it as flattery, complimenting the swordsmanship that just beat him, and the answer turns the compliment into a confession. Not about the weapon: about himself. Most readings treat the famous phrase here as an ideal to admire from a wise man at the top of his abilities. He is actually saying he fails the standard, out loud, in front of enemies who just watched him win. A beaten man conceding a duel would call it a fair loss. He calls the winning itself the shortfall, and Vinland Saga then spends two seasons testing whether anyone alive can meet the bar he set. Thors had been a Jomsviking commander before he faked his own death and disappeared to a farm in Iceland, so this is not a village elder offering a boy an untested principle. He is describing the terms of his desertion. The rule had already cost him a career and a name, and within a few episodes it costs him the rest: ambushed at sea, he beats Askeladd in single combat and declines to finish it, disarms the men sent to kill him, and takes an arrow because he has left himself nothing to answer one with. Thorfinn is hidden on the ship, watching. The sentence therefore produces its own refutation. The boy who hears it spends the entire first arc as a mercenary, killing for the man responsible, and Yukimura lets that sit without softening it. What holds the line up is not the sentiment but the accounting: the price is shown in full and the position is still never called wrong. A rule that gets its holder killed and its listener ruined is either the only serious thing in the story or the most irresponsible thing Thors ever said, and Vinland Saga spends its length refusing to choose.
