Winry has a practical claim on Edward’s adventure: it repeatedly sends her work home in pieces. In selected opening pages of the VIZ Volume 3 paperback, she demands advance notice for maintenance visits and reacts angrily when Edward calls his smashed automail merely broken. She made it; he needs her expertise to go on using it. Her welcome home does not erase the complaint, so the scene gives repair both a technical and a family meaning. The thrown wrench complicates any gentle portrait of that care. Reading her as an indispensable engineer does not require treating every reaction as admirable, or making romance the explanation for her skill. This introduction uses only the public library scan’s displayed opening pages, printed 8–11 and 14–15. It does not claim the complete repair sequence was read.

Edward has returned with his automail in pieces before he mocks Winry's delight in its construction. Her comeback has the advantage of evidence lying nearby. The work he can dismiss as an obsession is work he depends on, and his joke would lose much of its ease if that dependence stayed visible every time he made it. There is a fairer reading of his teasing, though: two people can recognize each other's expertise without speaking reverently about it. Her answering insult keeps the exchange reciprocal instead of turning it into a solemn demand for gratitude. What matters is that the story gives her irritation a material cause. She has made something difficult, he has damaged it, and his explanation treats the pieces as almost a joke. That does not make her the owner of his decisions or him incapable of acting alone. It gives her a claim to have her labor taken seriously. Their familiarity can contain affection and annoyance at once; the repair should not disappear behind either feeling.

“I didn't do the maintenance on your auto-mail the way I should have, and now... This is my fault...”
Edward laughs off the circumstances of his hospitalization, but Winry refuses the light tone and names her part in the maintenance failure. He tries to divert the blame toward other causes and asks Al to agree. The exchange makes affection and accountability pull in different directions. Edward's reassurance can be kind without being useful to the person trying to understand what she did wrong. Winry is not asking whether he still values her; she is identifying a professional responsibility that his comfort risks blurring. At the same time, his insistence on other causes resists making one mistake explain the whole injury. Neither side has to be entirely right for the scene to work. The repair between them requires enough room for Winry to own an error without being reduced to it, and enough room for Edward to accept her concern without conducting the entire conversation as a search for someone to blame.

“Aw, c'mon. Do you have to treat everything like alchemy? The whole equivalent exchange thing is just nonsense!”
Winry's first alternative to Edward's proposal is her whole life. Then she backs away from the total, tries several percentages and settles on eighty-five. The comedy keeps negotiating after she has supposedly dismissed the need for exchange. It is tempting to take her answer as proof that love should give everything without counting. Her own revision makes that reading too easy. She wants to offer more than Edward's half-and-half formula while retaining some room that the word 'whole' would surrender. The percentages are not a legal agreement or a stable measure of affection. They are evidence that rejecting a rigid bargain does not require abandoning every limit. Edward laughs, praises her reply and hugs her. What he welcomes is a person revising the terms, not a silent recipient accepting his calculation. Winry can reject alchemy as the language of the proposal and still have something of her own left to negotiate with.

In episode 6 she gets a rhapsody about ball bearings and the series never walks it back. In most shonen the childhood friend who maintains the hero's prosthetic would be a support role with a running gag attached; here the maintenance is a trade with its own vocabulary, and the enthusiasm is the characterization rather than the joke. Everything Winry does later, up to and including the surgery scenes, is this scene taken seriously.
