Borrowing Before Collecting
Keep borrowed reading progress separate from owned books when choosing the next manga purchase.
Borrowing an opening manga book can help answer whether to collect its story. Keep a separate record of the edition borrowed and the material actually read. Returning a library loan ends temporary possession without erasing reading progress; a later purchase should distinguish what has been read from what is owned.
Identify the borrowed edition
Record the full title, edition name, number and ISBN from the copy or its library entry. Compare that identification with the intended purchase. The International ISBN Agency’s rules require distinct ISBNs for different formats and language editions, so a shared story title is not enough to identify the same product.
Death Note Black Edition 1 is a useful worked example: VIZ identifies ISBN 9781421539645 and explicitly says it contains original volumes 1 and 2. Someone who borrows and finishes that book has read those two originals. Buying single 2 afterward repeats some read material, even if no Death Note book is yet owned.
Keep reading and ownership as separate lists
| Question | Record to keep |
|---|---|
| What have I read? | Original volumes or verified chapter span completed |
| What do I own? | Actual copies and their named editions |
| What do I want to buy? | Continuations, replacements or deliberate rereading copies |
A reader can reasonably buy the opening book after borrowing it because rereading or ownership is the goal. The same purchase can be wasteful if it is made under the mistaken impression that the book continues the story. Record the purpose before deciding whether repetition matters.
A loan can test interest, with limits
Use the opening to decide whether the premise and reading experience appeal to you. It cannot establish how every later volume develops or whether a different edition has matching production qualities. A library copy’s condition also does not demonstrate the condition of a new or used copy offered elsewhere.
Check borrowing eligibility, availability and loan terms with the intended library. This guide does not promise a particular library’s stock, borrowing period or digital access. If the opening is unavailable, an authorized publisher preview is another way to try the beginning without inventing access to the full book.
Choose the purchase after the reading
For collecting from the start, compare the opening formats and choose the one wanted on the shelf. For continuing only, use the last verified original material read and check the proposed next book’s contents. For a mixed collection, keep the borrowed edition out of the owned-volume count while retaining it in reading progress.
The Death Note guide describes its purchase routes. The edition-switching guide explains why the next spine number may repeat or skip material. Borrowing can reduce uncertainty about the story choice; the edition record makes the subsequent purchase precise.
