The comparison concerns VIZ's English digital release. It does not establish the Japanese wording, an anime dub or subtitle track, or the wording of every physical printing. Those would need their own checked passages.

What changed in April 2023?

Viz posted chapter 221 in April 2023. It covered Gojo's return after more than three years, a long-awaited moment for the series. Viz's official English release ended the chapter on a close-up of Gojo answering with a flat "no". Within days Viz quietly posted an update to the same chapter in which the shot reads "Nah, I'd win." ComicBook reported in 2025 that Viz still had not publicly acknowledged the complaints about its translation.

So both renderings are official. They are two versions of one English translation, not a translation and a fan edit.

Why the chapter 3 callback matters

At the most basic level the two answers say the same thing. "No" is a denial, though, and "Nah, I'd win" is a boast with a specific target. The line answers a question about whether Gojo would lose, and it repeats, word for word, his answer to a similar question in chapter 3.

That setup is in Viz's own English edition. In chapter 3, on page 92 of Volume 1, Yuji asks whether Gojo would lose to Sukuna at full power, and Gojo answers, "Nah, I'd win." The first English release of chapter 221 answered with a different sentence, so the callback had no setup to point back to. The revision restored the wording Viz had used for the setup twenty-four volumes earlier.

That gap became one example in a larger complaint about the English translation. In August 2025, nearly a year after the manga ended, ComicBook reported a fan petition asking for the manga to be retranslated, with more than 200 signatures at the time, and named chapter 221 as one of a couple of errors Viz had quietly fixed.

How we checked, and what remains unread

Megan Peters's 25 April 2023 report for ComicBook documents both renderings in its body text and explains the chapter 3 callback. CBR's report the same day gives the question Gojo is answering as "Would you lose?", and ComicBook's August 2025 report covers the petition. The chapter 221 comparison relies on that reporting. We have not inspected chapter 221 itself: in September 2026 neither the Japanese chapter nor the current English one was free to read from an official source, and the free official previews of Volume 25 in both languages end before it. The chapter 3 wording was read first-hand in Viz's free official release of that chapter on 22 September 2026: page 92, the balloon "NAH, I'D WIN." That distinction matters. Quote lists often print a line as a title-cased heading and never in the body, which tells you a line exists but loses the punctuation and casing you came to check.
