Did Gojo Really Say “Nah, I'd Win”?

Yes. Gojo says it, and it is the most quoted line in Jujutsu Kaisen. The complication is that English readers who bought the chapter on the day it came out did not read those words, because the official translation said something else.

The verdict

Real, with the wording changed after publication. The line belongs to Gojo in chapter 221 of the manga. The English text now sold as chapter 221 is not the English text Viz originally published.

What the English said first

Chapter 221 came out on 23 April 2023 and covered Gojo's return, one of the most anticipated moments in the series. Viz's official English release closed the scene on a close-up of Gojo answering with a flat "no". Some time afterwards Viz posted an updated version of the same chapter in which the answer reads "Nah, I'd win." The revision arrived quietly, with no announcement, replacing the earlier wording in place.

So both renderings are official, and the one most people can quote from memory is the second one.

Why the difference is not cosmetic

"No" is a denial. "Nah, I'd win" is a boast, and it is a boast with a specific target. The line answers a question about whether Gojo could lose, and it reaches back to chapter 3, where Gojo is asked outright who would win between himself and Sukuna. Read against that earlier scene, the revised wording completes a joke the series set up hundreds of chapters earlier. The flat "no" closes the same scene without the callback, and without the swagger that made the panel travel.

That gap is why the translation became a story of its own. Nearly a year after the manga ended, readers were still signing a petition asking Viz to retranslate it.

What this does not mean

It does not mean the popular version is fan invention. It is the publisher's own current text, and anyone quoting "Nah, I'd win" is quoting an official English release. It does mean that a reader who checked the line against Viz in early 2023 and a reader who checks it today are looking at two different sentences, which is worth knowing before anyone calls either of them wrong.

Both renderings are documented in reporting on the revision, which quotes the original and the replacement side by side rather than only naming the chapter. That distinction matters: quote lists frequently print a line as a title-cased heading and never in the body, which tells you a line exists but destroys the punctuation and casing you came to check.
