Jujutsu Kaisen's Ending, Explained

The manga finished on chapter 271, titled "From Now On", after six years. Then, almost three months later, it finished again: sixteen pages of four new epilogues arrived in the final volume on 25 December 2024. Which of those you read is roughly which ending you think Jujutsu Kaisen has, and a good deal of the argument about it comes from people comparing different books.

The short version

Yuji defeats Sukuna, who refuses a last offer and disintegrates. Megumi, whose body Sukuna had taken over, survives, and the story is careful to make his survival a decision rather than a rescue: he has to choose to keep going after there is no longer anything forcing him to. Yuji is alive at the end. Gojo is not, and does not come back; in the final chapter Yuji, on a mission, remembers Gojo expressing his hopes in him.

Gojo dies thirty-five chapters early, and that is the structure

Satoru Gojo is killed by Sukuna in chapter 236. The anime sealed him in season 2, and a great many viewers assumed sealing was a holding pattern. It was not.

Almost every complaint about this ending is really a complaint about that decision, so it is worth stating plainly what it does. The series spends its final act without the character it was most often watched for, and it does not replace him. Readers built shrines to him, which tells you the size of the hole.

Whether that reads as a failure of nerve or the opposite depends on what you think the series was arguing. Gojo spends the whole story insisting that the system fails because it depends on one overwhelming person, and that the answer is to raise people who do not need him. A story that agreed with him and then quietly kept him alive would have been arguing with itself. This one takes the position and pays for it, and paying for it is unpleasant. That is not the same as being wrong.

Sukuna's afterlife

The afterlife scene is the strangest good idea in the ending. Sukuna, dead, meets Mahito in a kind of limbo and tells him that if he ever gets a chance at life again, he will choose a different path, which disappoints the curse. Then he takes Uraume with him and passes on, accepting his defeat and leaving Mahito alone.

The last page

The story ends where it started: the last of Sukuna's fingers is shown back in the tool shed of Yuji's old school, the school that had kept one of his fingers as a talisman.

That is the ending, and everything else is commentary on it.

The epilogue is much stranger than the finale

The December epilogues, sixteen pages in the final volume, focus on four characters: Yūko Ozawa, Uraume, Nobara Kugisaki and Panda, and Panda's leaps ahead. In 2035 Panda stops functioning and is stored by the Gojo clan, with Yuta Okkotsu as its acting head. By 2080 Yuta's grandchildren find Panda's cursed corpse in storage.

Ending a shonen manga sixty years after its cast has aged out is an unusual move, and it lands somewhere between touching and clinical. The generation the finale spends its energy saving is, in Panda's epilogue, a set of names attached to grandchildren. It is the one part of this ending that feels genuinely uninterested in being liked, and it is probably the part that will still be argued about in ten years.

Season 3, The Culling Game Part 1, ran twelve episodes from 8 January to 26 March 2026, opening with an hour-long double episode and closing on an extended one. The Culling Game does not finish there; season 4 continues it.
