Mushishi Manga: The Collector’s Edition Hardcovers
Mushishi returned to English print in November 2025 with Kodansha’s five-book Collector’s Edition. Three hardcovers are out, two are dated for December 2026 and June 2027, and each collects two Japanese volumes.
The way to buy Mushishi in English now is Kodansha’s Collector’s Edition: five hardcovers, each collecting two Japanese volumes. Books 1 to 3 are out; Books 4 and 5 are dated December 15, 2026 and June 15, 2027. The publisher’s copy describes “a hardcover omnibus edition featuring a completely original translation and new cover designs.”
The five books
| Book | Collects | Release | Pages | US list |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Collector’s Edition 1 | Japanese vols. 1–2 | November 4, 2025 | 464 | $29.99 |
| Collector’s Edition 2 | Japanese vols. 3–4 | April 14, 2026 | 496 | $29.99 |
| Collector’s Edition 3 | Japanese vols. 5–6 | September 22, 2026 | 504 | $29.99 |
| Collector’s Edition 4 | Japanese vols. 7–8 | December 15, 2026 (announced) | 464 | $29.99 |
| Collector’s Edition 5 | Japanese vols. 9–10 and “Hihamukage” | June 15, 2027 (announced) | 608 | $29.99 |
All five list at $29.99, $149.95 for the set. Book 5 is the longest, and it adds what the publisher calls a “never-before-published special chapter ‘Hihamukage.’” That chapter is a reason not to stop at Book 4 if you already own the story another way.
What the new edition changes
The publisher’s description is specific: the Collector’s Edition “features an all-new translation and lettering, and beautiful color pages and cover illustrations never seen in the U.S. before.” The same copy says that “after being out of print for 15 years, English copies of Mushishi became as elusive as the strange creatures that populate its pages.” That earlier English edition was a Del Rey paperback run; Kodansha’s original Mushishi listing is now a separate eight-book digital series, not the hardcover checklist. We have not established the full ISBN list of the old paperbacks, so this guide does not match them book by book.
Mixing with older copies
If you own some of the old paperbacks, the arithmetic is easy, because each Collector’s Edition book states which two Japanese volumes it holds. The translation is new, though, so names and lines will not read the same across the two editions. Most readers will want one edition on the shelf; our edition-switching guide covers the checks.
Which to buy
- New reader: Collector’s Edition 1.
- Collecting the set: Books 1 to 3 now, Books 4 and 5 on their announced dates. Keep the last two on a wanted list until they are actually published.
- Gift buyer: say “Collector’s Edition” and the number; an old Del Rey “Mushishi 2” is a different book.
