“Enjoy the side trips. A lot, okay? Things that are more important than what you're hunting for could be right there by the side of the road.”

The father the whole series is a search for, who left his son a recorded message saying he did not want to see him, and whose own game was set up not to go easy on the boy. When Gon finally reaches him, the reunion is one conversation about the wider world, and the closest thing to an apology is a piece of advice.

The man recommending side trips is the man who laid every one of them. Greed Island, the detour that swallows a whole arc, was built by Ging and his friends; and clearing it earned Gon an Accompany card that delivered him to Kite rather than to his father. So this is not a sage passing on a philosophy of wandering. It is a parent describing his own method after it has run its course, with the boy who survived it sitting beside him. The standard reading takes the line as the series' thesis, journey over destination, and it is that. It is also the closest Ging ever comes to an apology, offered as advice so that it never has to be one. Gon accepts it, which says more about Gon than about the line.
