Meruem asks to hear his name one last time, and Komugi answers by using it in a good-night wish. The farewell grants his request without promising that either of them will survive. Earlier in the episode, the king lowers his head before Palm to ask for Komugi’s location. Those two requests make a particular distinction: power cannot supply the recognition he wants from another person. Komugi’s reassurance is therefore narrower than a rescue. She can address him, remain the person answering him, and speak of joining him; she cannot turn the ending into a recovery. The language of bedtime gives that limit an ordinary form. It would be easy to read the gentleness as a denial of death, but the promise to join him keeps death inside the sentence. Her answer comforts by accepting the separation that is arriving and making it temporary in her own expectation, rather than pretending it will not happen.
