The other Wammy's boy, who could not stand to place second and left the building to win from outside it. Treats a succession as a race and a rivalry as a method. Mello’s ambition in the episode-27 anime transcription has two objects: becoming the best and eliminating competition. An actual encounter in the licensed manga makes that declaration less abstract. On printed page 138 of VIZ’s Black Edition V, Near thanks him for information that has narrowed the suspects for Kira. Mello responds by aiming a gun at Near and rejecting the role of a tool in somebody else’s puzzle. Near’s gratitude acknowledges a contribution; it does not give Mello control over how that contribution will be used. Our reading is that finishing ahead of Near matters partly because finishing together could leave Near looking like the author of Mello’s work. Yet the encounter also resists an easy dismissal of him as uselessly envious. Near says that Mello has advanced the investigation, even as Mello objects to the relationship that this creates. Useful cooperation can happen without agreement about who is cooperating with whom. This reading combines Wikiquote’s identified episode-27 English anime transcription with a freshly read library scan of the licensed Black Edition V page. It does not treat the two as the same wording or claim that this encounter explains every later decision.

A line that gets reproduced as if it were a thesis when it is barely an observation, and the series does not even agree with it. Nothing that actually drives this plot is revenge: Light is driven by vanity, Near by ranking, L by curiosity, Misa by gratitude. Mello is the exception rather than the rule he is stating, and the sentence works better as self-description than as the maxim the internet keeps quoting.

Near thanks Mello for helping narrow the suspects for Kira. Mello answers by pulling a gun, and another weapon is immediately pointed back at him. His refusal to be a tool follows an acknowledgment that his actions have already been useful to Near. That sequence makes the demand less about controlling the evidence than controlling what cooperation means. He can withhold consent to a role; he cannot make Near stop drawing conclusions from what he has done. Later in the conversation Mello admits their destination is the same and casts it as a race. The gun does not establish a different goal. It enforces his right to compete with the person his work has helped.

Agreement would be an odd name for this exchange. Before promising to wait, Mello asks which of them will reach Kira first and announces a race, while Near sits at his toys and Mello eats chocolate on the way out. The shared destination does not settle their relative positions. Mello has assigned himself the arrival and Near the catching up, so even a sentence acknowledging common purpose preserves a ranking. The strongest case for cooperation is that both are pursuing the same suspect; this page grants that without granting friendship or a settled plan. Mello can recognize their dependence on the same result and still insist that the result must identify a winner.
