Rem Quotes

2 quotes from Death Note, each with commentary on what it means and why it stuck.

The shinigami who behaves most like a person, protective to the point of self-destruction, and is destroyed by the one human better at leverage than she is.

“Humans are truly... disgusting creatures!”

Usually taken as a god of death sneering at mortals from above. It reads better as an appraisal from someone who has just been outmanoeuvred by one. Rem is the shinigami who behaves most like a person in this story, protective to the point of self-destruction, and the disgust in the line is aimed at a species that turned out to be better at leverage than she is.

“Light... he can even kill a shinigami. He has surpassed us.”

An epitaph written by the victim. Killing a shinigami is not something the rules permit a human to do directly, so what the sentence actually describes is a person who found the one arrangement of pressure that makes a god of death write her own name. The series treats this as the high point of the protagonist's competence, and it is also the last time his plans work cleanly.
