“When your sister eats someone, there are two things you have to do... Kill your sister... then slit your own belly and die! That is what it means to travel with your sister who has become a demon!”
Sakonji Urokodaki Quotes
2 quotes from Demon Slayer, each with commentary on what it means and why it stuck.
“Don't trust what others say. Can't you solve this riddle yourself?”
Tanjiro solves the riddle and does not act on the answer. By folio 91 he has the method and the rock in his hands; the sun comes up on folio 93 while he is still holding it, and his own verdict is that he was wasting time. Urokodaki's complaint on folio 97 is not that the boy lacked the answer but that he could never finish off a demon before the morning light. So the line poses a question of knowledge when the test was nerve. As teaching, that is misdirection, and the old man is grading something he never names aloud. The first sentence is odder still. A hint was on the record: Giyu's warning on folio 57 to keep Nezuko out of direct sunlight, and the hole she dug on folio 64 to stay out of it. Tanjiro connects the two only on folio 94, after the fact. Distrusting what others said was not his problem here. Putting two of their remarks together was.

Slapping a boy whose family has just been killed, a masked stranger then tells him the correct response to his sister's first victim is two more deaths, hers and his. Call that monstrous and the charge deserves weight; the rule still beats the alternatives these chapters have actually offered. Giyu's, on folio 34, was her head, at once, because killing demons is his job. The risk is not invented either: on folio 70 drool runs from Nezuko's muzzle at the sight of the bodies in the way station. Tanjiro offered terms on folio 36, that he would not let her hurt anyone, with nothing behind them. Urokodaki's are the first with a price attached, and the price is collateral, Tanjiro's life pledged against her conduct. A balloon further down the page names the purpose, his sacred duty to see that it never happens. A rule written never to be invoked is a deterrent, and it is aimed at the brother, since the letter on folio 88 has already vouched for the sister.
