She says it to Tanjiro, not to the Hashira, and the second sentence is about them rather than to them. Shinobu's public manner is a smile she does not take off, and the smile is not a coping mechanism but a policy: her sister Kanae wanted her to be kind to demons, and she has been carrying out that instruction with her face for years. Here the policy is dropped for one listener, a junior swordsman who travels with a demon, and the reason is to hand him the job. She is not so much confessing as resigning from a hope she cannot carry, and passing it to the one person she has met who might. The second sentence is the ugly one. Tanjiro's sister has just stood trial in front of those Hashira, and Shinobu is telling him, kindly, that the hostility in that room was not an exception.
