A broom balanced on one finger is Shiina's answer to an operation she cannot stop reconsidering. Hinata explains that Otonashi alone survived; Otonashi calls it luck. Shiina instead identifies a skill in which he must have surpassed her and sets about proving that she possesses more of it. The effort is impressive. The explanation is poor. Nothing in their exchange establishes concentration as the cause of his survival, and Otonashi even tells her that hers is better. Her training protects the assumption that the result must express a measurable ranking between them. Baseball then offers a new contest, but she intends to keep balancing the broom so the difference in concentration will become visible. That will demonstrate who can play while balancing a broom. It cannot settle why the earlier operation ended as it did. Shiina has made a stubborn performance of investigating failure while choosing a test that preserves the account she wanted from the start.
