A year into the torture, with his tendons cut and his tongue removed, Griffith is shown a figure who calls him family. The 1997 series plants this in episode 22, two before it needs it, and the scene's job is to make the Eclipse an appointment rather than an ambush. Zodd had promised in episode 6 that Griffith's ambition would crumble; here is the party that has been waiting for it to. What the 1997 series never explains, and the films do, is where the stone at his throat came from: a fortune-teller sold it to him as the Egg of the King, destined to rule the world in exchange for flesh and blood, so the claim to kinship is not a lie. He was chosen before he had done anything, and the dungeon has only made the door findable. Void speaks in the plural throughout, and the choice of pronoun is the seduction: a man who has lost every follower is being told he still belongs to a we.

Ryuk drops the Death Note because he is bored, and Death Note runs on a devil who wants nothing from Light except a show. Void wants something. The Godhand in Berserk are officiants, and this is a christening: a new name, a new body, a family that speaks as a unit, all in exchange for the people in the room. Set the two devils side by side and the difference in cosmology is the difference in the stories. Light chooses everything and is watched; Griffith is chosen, the Behelit found him years before, and is welcomed. The dub's Void pronounces the name as if it settled a question, and the 1997 series ends minutes later with no Skull Knight, no rescue shown, Guts and Casca simply alive at Godo's forge in the last scene. A viewer of this version is left with the renaming as the show's final word on Griffith, which is bleaker than any version that went on to give Femto a second act.
