Three seasons had to be spent inside the walls before this could read as a description rather than as relativism. The audience learned that world the way its population did: a Church guarding a lie, a king who wiped everyone's memory, a history that begins at a wall. Kruger is speaking to a man whose wife has just been fed to the sea for the crime of wanting the records opened. What makes the line hold is that the series then runs the experiment twice on the same people. Eldians are devils in Marley and victims on Paradis, and nothing about them changes between the two positions except who is doing the describing. Kruger is the proof standing in front of Grisha: a Marleyan officer, an Eldian spy, and a man about to hand his enemy the most dangerous power on earth. All three descriptions are accurate.

He names two children who do not exist yet. Grisha has never met a Mikasa or an Armin, will not father the boy who befriends them for years, and the man saying the names is minutes from being eaten. The episode does not explain it, and Eren, watching the memory from decades downstream, registers only that something has bled the wrong way through time. Everything the last two seasons do runs out of this sentence. If a Titan's memories can travel backwards then the war was never a sequence of decisions, and the question of whether anybody chose anything stops being answerable from inside the story. It is delivered as an instruction from a dying spy. It functions as the moment Attack on Titan quietly stops being about walls.
