Corkus is the Hawk the series uses for comic relief, the one who mocked Guts for losing two duels in a row and shook before Doldrey while claiming to be excited. The case for taking him seriously is that he was right every time. He never trusted Guts from the day he mocked him in episode 3, and Guts left; he says here, smashing his sword on a rock, that the rescue was always going to produce a broken man and a band of outlaws, and it has. The band has spent a year living like rats on faith that Griffith would come back and lead them somewhere. The last clause is the concession the cynic makes against himself. He hoped anyway, along with everyone he was sneering at, which is why the speech is a confession and not an I-told-you-so. The series gives its most honest statement of what the Hawks were for to the member who liked them least, one episode before there are no Hawks.
