Erza's station battle in Volume 3 makes her strength visible through Lucy's astonishment, then tests a different kind of authority. She changes weapons and armor to deal with the opponents before her, having sent Natsu and Gray after Erigor together. They leave as instructed, yet soon argue about the cooperation she expects. That gap is the useful complication in her confidence: being able to do her own job does not let her perform theirs for them. Her threat to the opposing wizards also has a concrete provocation. They have discussed the women as captives to sell, and she answers in the guild's name. We read the scene as a defense of the people present as well as of Fairy Tail's reputation. These opening pages establish her force and the resistance her commands meet; they do not guarantee that every team she directs will function.
“If you can combine your powers... ...not even Erigor should be able to stand against you!!”
Natsu and Gray exchange an unhappy look as soon as Erza gives the order. Twelve pages later they are still arguing about it: one objects that fire and water cannot work together, and Natsu insists that he can defeat Erigor alone. That interval matters because the chapter has spent most of it demonstrating how formidable Erza is. She changes weapons faster than her opponents can answer and clears a crowd while Lucy watches in astonishment. Yet the two people she sent away do not become a functioning team simply because she said they should. The command is a prediction with an unmet condition, not a victory already secured. Read beside her individual display, it puts a small limit on the chapter's celebration of strength. Erza can supply enough force for her own assignment; supplying cooperation for somebody else's assignment is a different problem. Their argument is the joke that keeps her confidence from becoming the narrator's guarantee.

Erza has already divided the work: Natsu and Gray are to chase Erigor, while she and Lucy handle the wizards left at the station. The threat follows those opponents discussing the women as captives they might sell. Calling it loyalty alone misses that immediate context. She is answering a group that has mistaken two women for an easy part of the operation, and she chooses the guild's name as the ground on which to answer. The chapter then supplies a second audience for her performance. Lucy watches her change weapons and armor, hears Happy explain the magic, and sees the crowd fall before the circle of swords. Our reading is that this introduction makes Erza's reputation visible to a newcomer. The threat itself is less interesting than its staging: she does not need an enemy to acknowledge her authority before acting, but Lucy's changing expression lets the reader watch someone learn it.
