“Become stronger before you decide to face the mighty Wamuu again, child. That way, you can be worthy of my time as I destroy you with honor.”
2 quotes from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, each with commentary on what it means and why it stuck.
“Become stronger before you decide to face the mighty Wamuu again, child. That way, you can be worthy of my time as I destroy you with honor.”
“I don't need eyes, words, or a horn. I will know it. What matters is that you do it.”
Every item on the list is something Wamuu has already given up. The eyes went in the chariot race, gouged out by his own hand so that a horn could read the wind instead, and now the horn is dissolving with the rest of him. What he asks is that Joseph drink the antidote from Wamuu's own ring, ending the poison deadline Wamuu set weeks earlier, and do it after Wamuu can no longer check. The line depends on the chariot race's damage. A villain who had not blinded himself for a fair fight could not say he needs no eyes; this one paid for the sentence in the previous episode. It is also a kind of trust between enemies that the show never grants its other Pillar Men. In the same episode Kars ambushes Lisa Lisa from behind a body double. Wamuu spends his last strength killing the vampires who went for Joseph, and his last request is for the other man's survival, taken on faith.

It sounds like contempt. It is closer to a contract, and Wamuu keeps his side of it with a strictness nobody else in Battle Tendency matches. He has just popped every one of Caesar's bubbles, and instead of finishing him he sets terms before throwing him back: get stronger, come back, be worth the trouble. Caesar does come back, five episodes later, with a new technique and sunlight on his side. Wamuu kills him, and then lets Caesar's last blood bubble, carrying Wamuu's own lip ring with the antidote inside, float free for Joseph out of respect. He destroys Caesar with honor exactly as promised, down to the courtesy after the kill. The closing clause, which reads as trash talk, turns out to be his entire ethic, stated plainly the first time he meets the man he will honor most. Kars, eight episodes later, announces that he is no warrior like Wamuu and that victory justifies any means. Wamuu's arrogance has a rulebook, and this is page one.
