He has just become the thing his species spent millennia designing itself toward, and the sentence is a checklist: sunlight, done; the one technique that could kill him, now his to use. What the line commits him to is the assumption that having every capability is the same as having won. Joseph, who has no capabilities left at all by this point, beats him with a volcano, a severed hand and an accident, and the story's last word on Kars is that he drifts in space for the rest of time, eventually stopping thinking altogether. Conquering the sun turns out to be the easy half. The hard half was a universe that never agreed to be conquered, and the perfect organism ends the arc as a rock with a memory. Araki lets the boast stand for one page before the ground opens.

He is usually filed as the honourless one beside Wamuu the noble warrior, and the line invites it. But look at what the honour of the Pillar Men actually consists of. Wamuu's code is a duel etiquette; it exists to make killing humans feel like sport. Kars, who has just stabbed a woman through the back mid-conversation, is at least telling the truth about what the three of them came for, which is a stone that makes them immune to the sun so they can eat everything. The romantic is the one with the more decorative account of the same project. Read that way, the sentence is not a villain confessing to being worse than his lieutenant. It is a creature declining to pretend that the lieutenant's rules were ever the point, and the series backs him: the Red Stone is what the whole arc has been about since episode ten.
