“I'm going to get your disc back from the priest! Your Foo Fighters disc! Then you can come back!”
F.F. is a colony of plankton wearing a dead inmate's body, and Jolyne's promise treats her as a person with a soul that can be retrieved, because in this story that is technically true: Pucci pulls minds out as discs and the disc can be put back. The line is what a Joestar says at a deathbed, and the arc is built to make it unkeepable. Jolyne does reach the priest. She does not get the disc, and the ending erases the universe in which F.F. died rather than restoring the one where she lived. What the promise costs is the whole shape of the finale. Every choice Jolyne makes from the prison break onward is downstream of a vow to a puddle of plankton that she never manages to honour, and the series does not pretend otherwise. The friend she gets back in the last chapter is a stranger with the same face.

She is the first JoJo to refuse the name, and she does it in a Florida holding cell to a lawyer she is about to learn has sold her out. The refusal is precise. Jonathan, Joseph, Jotaro, Josuke and Giorno all accepted the nickname from someone; Jolyne assigns it to one person, her mother, and the person conspicuously not on the list is the father who was absent for her entire childhood and is about to walk into the story with a Stand. Jotaro's own opening in Part 3 was to reject family, too, from inside a jail cell, and Araki stages the daughter's introduction as a deliberate rhyme. The difference is who each of them is angry at. He was angry at himself. She has someone specific, and he is on his way to visit.
